Last week (October 18, 2021), we petitioned the High Court, together with Rabba Dr. Anat Sharbat, and Rabba Batya Jacobs.
In the petition, we asked the Chief Rabbinate and the Ministry of Religious Services to explain why women are not allowed to officiate marriage ceremonies for Jewish couples who choose to get married through the rabbinate.
“There is no halakhic problem with this. As in many things, the male historical monopoly blinds our eyes. From a halakhic point of view, women can arrange kiddushin and even, in the case of those who say there are halakhic challenges – solutions can be found”, explains Rabba Dr. Anat Sharbat .
The petition was filed by Adv. Shai Zilberberg and Adv. Avishag Uzard.
