On Oct. 7, Hamas terrorists tried to break into G’s house that was on the ground floor of a building in Sderot. They failed. G and her son were removed from their home when the government evacuated their city. They were transferred to a hotel in another city in Israel. Following threats from her ex-husband, they had to move again. However the ex-husband, who was serving prison time when this happened, managed to find her and continue to threaten that he would hurt their son wherever they were living. G returned to her home despite threats to her safety from the war and her ex-husband and without any education framework.
But this isn’t the beginning of her story. Nearly two years prior, G made a change in her life and took steps to exit an abusive marriage. She filed for divorce and child support payments and custody. After her husband pressured her and promised to stop being violent, she agreed to close the file. However, soon thereafter, he resumed his violent ways and was convicted in criminal proceedings. At this stage, G turned to the Rackman Center asking for help in securing her Gett and starting a new life for her and her son. One of our first steps was getting a restraining order. Today, he is forbidden from being in proximity to G’s residence. We also filed a series of claims: divorce, dissolution of their joint property, child support and child custody.
Recently, we managed to secure G her Gett and half of the couple’s joint property, child support payments and sole custody.
“When I arrived at the Rackman Center, I was a battered woman, broken, scared and with such severe sadness that fear no longer had words. I arrived skeptical, not believing that a miracle could happen and I would be freed from this difficult marriage that almost led to my death several times. I found a center with lawyers who see you, who are available for any question at any hour and who are, first and foremost, people.”
