Equal Representation for Women – in Israel’s Religious Institutes as well.

Israel’s High Court of Justice ruled yesterday that the civil service must improve the representation of women. The Rackman Center congratulates the Israel Women’s Network, Forum Dvorah and Na’amat on this important achievement.

Attorney Keren Horowitz, CEO of the Rackman Center said: “We hope that the High Court will also consider our demand for adequate representation of women in Israel’s religious institutions. The amendment to the Rabbinate Law (Composition of the Electoral Assembly) passed last December ignores the High Court ruling, excluding women with Torah education from participating in the Electoral Assembly, and pushing women out of influential positions in the religious establishment.
This is a law that blatantly discriminates against women, contrary to the Women’s Equal Rights Law, and should never have been enacted.”

We agree with the ruling of the Honorable Justice Dafna Barak Erez and hope that the principle of adequate representation will only be expressed in Israel’s courts but also be applied in practice, both in the civil service and in religious institutions.
