Following the approval of a bill to expand the authority of rabbinical courts over child support, Prof. Ruth Halperin-Kaddari spoke out.
She stated:
“It is time to regulate the entire issue of child support in Israel through organized legislation, but this is not the way to do it. Fifteen years ago, a state committee headed by Prof. Shiffman determined that it is impossible to make children’s rights to parental support dependent on their religious affiliation. We need to make an immediate change and enact a uniform support law that applies to every child equally, rather than legislation that perpetuates religious coercion and expands the authority of the rabbinical courts.”
The Rackman Center supports calls for a fair and equal child support law that protects children’s rights across all communities in Israel.
